California enrolls a far lower percentage of English learners in bilingual education programs than other states, according to a report released in October from The Century Foundation.

The authors also found that California is investing less than other states in bilingual education. They recommend the state significantly expand investment in multilingual instruction, particularly dual-language immersion programs; prioritize enrollment in those programs for English learners; and invest more in recruiting and preparing bilingual teachers. 

The East Side Union High School District has approximately 900 unhoused students, compared to 300 in 2020. Officials said the number continues to climb and cite inflation, cost of living increases and the rollback of COVID-19 pandemic renter protections as the key culprits. The number of homeless students in the district is projected reach about 1,000 by the end of the year, district spokesperson Sergio Diaz Luna said.

As a classified employee of Woodland Joint Unified School District, Yolanda David is doing her part to ensure that all students graduate prepared for college or a career.

She said that supporting students and collaborating with our WJUSD community is the best part of her job.

“I have to say that I genuinely love my job,” David said. “One of the best things about my job is all of the wonderful interactions I get to have with students, families, teachers, and all other staff. Building connections with students and providing the assistance they need for a successful day is extremely rewarding. Whether they need a band-aid, a snack, or maybe just someone to talk to. Whatever the reason, I’m humbled and thankful that I get to be part of it. The kindness from the students, families, and staff make me feel very appreciated.”

Workers at two Wells Fargo bank branches launched unionization efforts Monday, shifting the attention of the resurgent labor movement to an industry that has historically been cool to it.

A North County charter school network that serves more than 5,300 students scrapped a 4-year-old policy that required privacy for transgender and gender non-conforming students and replaced it with one that would allow, and in some cases require, school staff to inform parents of changes to a student’s gender identity or expression without the student’s consent.

The Tehachapi Unified School District Board of Trustees approved increases to the classified salary schedule by 5%. It also provides all unit members employed on the date of the agreement with a one-time off-schedule payment in the amount of 5% of their annual base salary.

The agreement also increases the district's contribution to health and welfare benefits and makes other changes in benefits and working conditions.

The Biden administration is warning U.S. schools and colleges that they must take immediate action to stop antisemitism and Islamophobia on their campuses, citing an “alarming rise” in threats and harassment.

The Education Department says schools must intervene to stop conduct that is “objectively offensive and is so severe or pervasive that it limits or denies a person’s ability to participate in or benefit from the recipient’s education program or activity.” It urged schools to “be vigilant in protecting your students’ rights.”

School buses are extensions of the classroom and student transportation professionals need to have the same resources and support that classroom teachers have.

Chad Rose, an associate professor at the University of Missouri and director of the Missouri Bullying Prevention Lab, said half of all students experience bullying in a school setting. He said school bus drivers who establish connections and relationships with students are in the position to detect early signs of bullying.
