It is rare to see the names of school employees grace the exteriors of the places to which they dedicated so much time and care. Dorsey McCowan though, was one of those employees.

In a heartfelt tribute, the Lincoln Unified Board of Trustees and Lincoln Administrators posthumously renamed the Lincoln Public Safety Office the “Dorsey McCowan Public Safety Office” in honor of the former commander of the Lincoln Unified School District Police Department.

A pillar of strength and support for his community and students, Dorsey dedicated over 40 years of his life to law enforcement and civic leadership. He also made a significant impact on his fellow classified employees and CSEA, for which he served for 20 years as the Lincoln Chapter 282 President and as a Regional Representative.

His career began as a Stockton Police Department cadet, eventually becoming a narcotics dog handler and a member of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department Gang Task Force. Dorsey's commitment to public safety culminated in his role as commander of the district’s police department.

After retiring in 2017 to focus on his health, Dorsey's legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. On December 25th, 2019, Dorsey McCowan passed away after a long battle with illness, leaving behind a loving family, including his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Known for his passion for mentoring at-risk children, Dorsey went above and beyond his official duties. He guided the futures of those who might have otherwise ‘fallen through the cracks,’ standing up for children who needed someone in their corner. His dedication went beyond just doing his job - it was a genuine calling, a fulfillment of his mission to contribute to a better world.

Outside of work, Dorsey loved his family, sports, and spending time with friends. He especially enjoyed watching the Los Angeles Rams play on Sunday afternoons. Dorsey was also a fan of video games and spent time playing with his kids and later, his grandkids.

Dorsey was loved by everyone around him because of his cheerful laugh and friendly personality. He had countless stories to share about his life in Stockton and working in law enforcement.

Dorsey's contributions to campus safety and his enduring legacy will forever be remembered and celebrated by the community he served.
