What is an Area Director (AD)?

November 24, 2024

The Area Director, Area K is the democratically-elected representative of the Area's members to the Association's (state-level) Board of Directors. The Area K Director is elected by all CSEA members in San Diego and Imperial Counties for a two-year term each even-numbered year. The AD is one of 15 elected CSEA members on the Board of Directors; together as a unit, the Board shall be responsible to the membership for conduct of program in accordance with the Constitution and Bylaws and policy established by the Annual Conference. It shall develop the activities of the Association in a manner consistent with sound business practice and economy.

An AD's individual responsibilities include:

  • assuming representative responsibilities for the activities in their particular Area
  • shall organize Area Classified School Employee Week (CSEW) events annually
  • shall manage Area leadership institutes
  • shall serve on Board subcommittees regarding chapter election objections, as provided by Policy 618
  • may assist, as directed by the Association President, with governance trainings
  • may attend Regional Presidents Meetings (RPMs)
  • may attend other meetings/events as invited and/or assigned

Should the position of Area K Director become vacant for any reason, the Alternate Area K Director automatically becomes the Area K Director for the remainder of the unexpired term.

Like Chapter leadership, all members of the CSEA Board of Directors are elected volunteers, only receiving reimbursement for expenses incurred on CSEA business, and work their normal classified jobs with some release time to perform official CSEA duties.

History of Area K & Recognition of Area Directors

Area K is CSEA's 10th and newest Area. Originally a part of Area H, the rapid growth of schools and classified staff in Orange County necessitated an additional Area to better represent the needs of classified professionals in San Diego County and Imperial Valley. At the 73rd CSEA Annual Conference in 1999, delegates passed a Resolution realigning the statewide Area structure and creating Area K, with the Alternate Area H Director at the time automatically elevated to becoming the first Area K Director (since they had already resided in the newly created Area).

All former Area K Directors are still active in either their Chapters or local Retiree Unit Council, with Bea Mora currently serving as District K Director and Central Union High School District's newest school board member from where she retired, and Teri Minoux having served as Retiree Unit Executive Board Secretary for many years and continues to serve CSEA members as Vista Unified Chapter 389's appointee to the Vista Unified School District Personnel Commission.
