Juneteenth (June 19) is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

Passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden, Juneteenth was established as a federal holiday in 2021. The holiday commemorates the date of June 19, 1865, when enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free – more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
